Twilight’s Saga Will Change To Be More Guy-Friendly

Hey Twilighters!

Anyone who thinks guys are interested in Twilight is probably selling something. There’s little doubt that almost the entire audience for Stephanie Meyer’s vampire franchise is female. Nothing wrong with that, it’s not like there aren’t plenty of movies targeted squarely at guys. Except maybe the movie’s producers aren’t happy with an all-female audience. Twilight star Ashley Greene is hinting around that starting with the third movie, they may start luring dudes into buying tickets.

Talking to MTV Greene claims that for The Twilight Saga Eclipse director David Slade is planning something different. She says, “He’s … a little more focused on it being real and maybe it being gorier and a little dark and kind of dramatic.” Gorier? Darker? You mean like an actual vampire movie instead of a romance novel? What a unique approach.

Except the franchise has already been wildly successful as is. Women flock to it without that stuff, in fact they sort of seem to like that it doesn’t have it. So why add it? Dudes. Greene says, “The first one was very focused on this love story and really sweet and it was beautiful, but it didn’t have a lot of stuff that guys would go, ‘Yeah, I want to go see that,’ there’s going to be a lot more focus on [action], and the fight scene will have more emphasis on it. I definitely think it will be a little more guy-friendly.”

As a guy who will almost certainly have to sit through these movies that sounds fantastic but again… why? Already plenty of movies targeted at me. Twilight’s fanbase is entirely female, why not keep making movies for them instead of trying to cater to an audience which, let’s face it, is probably never going to exist. I don’t care if they somehow find a way to turn Eclipse into Blade, no guy is ever going to voluntarily see these movies. It’s Twilight. We’re only going if we get dragged by the women in our lives. Let them have their fun, keep the romance, keep the sweet stuff. Leave us out of it.

Something feels wrong here. After all, Eclipse’s director David Slade made no secret of his distaste for the franchise… at least before he got a job directing it. Before he started taking Summit’s paychecks he said this: “Twilight drunk? No, not even drunk. Twilight on acid? No, not even on acid? Twilight at gun point? Just shoot me.” He has since apologized for his statement, but that doesn’t mean he didn’t make it. And now he’s directing the third movie and may be trying to turn it into something his male fans, most of whom feel much the same about Twilight as he did, would be interested in.
